Several times while journaling during my Quiet Time, Jesus told me “(Joseph) Coaching people to journal to hear My voice is your sweet spot!”

In 2009, I hosted a twelve week webinar series called “Experiencing God Through Journaling.” The first book I ever wrote and published was “UNCOMMON Journaling For Breakthroughs.”

What to Write in a Journal

Jim Rohn was the master of the journal. “If you’re serious about becoming a wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured and unique individual—keep a journal. Don’t trust your memory. When you listen to something valuable, write it down,” Rohn said. As such, a journal can be many things to many people. Here are a few ideas for how to use a journal:

1. Keep a tally of your daily ‘wins’ or accomplishments.
2. Keep notes on an ongoing problem you’re facing.
3. Write down ideas. The Magic of Thinking Big author David J. Schwartz writes, “Every day, lots of good ideas are born only to die quickly because they aren’t nailed to paper.”
4. Maintain your lifelong goal file. Writing down your aspirations in a journal helps build a file so that you can review your ideas over and over.
5. Keep a to-do list for big projects. Day-to-day tasks can be scheduled in Outlook, but larger-scale projects are perfect for recording in a journal.
6. Jot down inspirational quotes and why they impact you.
7. Keep a dream journal bedside.
8. Handwrite important facts, statistics or phone numbers to help cement them in your mind.
9. Tear out a page and write a note to someone important in your life.

On the night of Sunday June 8, 2008 I went to bed around midnight and chose not to set my PDA alarm. I woke up around 6:25 AM the next morning (June 9) to use the bathroom and then lay in bed for about 10 minutes resting and reflecting before finally getting up. When I got up, I immediately came to my office, knelt down, and prayed. After that, I began journaling on my computer.

The first thing I was prompted to do was write a message titled “Are you seeking BREAKTHROUGHS in your life?” to send to my Your Daily Blessing followers in two days (on March 11). The key scripture I had chosen was Habakkuk 2:2 – Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.”

Next, Holy Spirit prompted me to help Dr. Jerry Graham prepare a Daily Gram (e-blast) for him to send to his 800 or so followers on Wed June 11 about the introductory journaling webinars (“UNCOMMON Journaling for Breakthroughs”) we were promoting together. The purpose of those was to spark interest in the 5-week UNCOMMON Journaling For DESTINY online coaching program we were launching live on June 17 and 18.

When I accessed Jerry’s Constant Contact (email marketing) account to post the message I had prepared, I discovered to my surprise that Jerry had already prepared an outstanding message titled “Journaling as Communion with God” using the exact same scripture verse I had chosen – Habakkuk 2:2.

In his message (upcoming email), Jerry mentioned that the two of us were teaming up to do a 5-week, 35-day on-line course in journaling (UNCOMMON Journaling For Destiny) with a special emphasis on understanding your life purpose or destiny. He went on to say this was an exciting combination of two of the most significant learning experiences he had been blessed with in his life, namely journaling as a means of engaging in a two-way dialog with God, and coaching with a specific emphasis on the “discovery” of one’s life purpose and destiny.

Jerry went on to write, “Over 25 years ago, I was taught to journal as a means of hearing God’s voice by Dr. Mark Virkler, who has since become a good friend and ministry colleague. Mark developed a seminar that he continues to teach to this day around the world, called ‘Communion With God’.” I recommend you CLICK HERE to read Jerry’s entire email message. Jerry is one of the most experienced DESTINY coaches in the world.

Jerry’s email (that he hadn’t even sent out yet) prompted me to call Dr. Mark Virkler later that afternoon (June 9). This was the very first time I had ever spoken to or met Mark Virkler and what he shared was so inspiring. I discovered that Mark is one of the top teachers in the world about spiritual journaling. As I was showing Mark how I journal online and shared the amazing story about Habakkuk 2:2 from that morning, Mark told me Habakkuk 2:1-2 is the foundational scripture for his Communion With God Ministries.

Now that grabbed my attention. 3 times in one day the LORD brought the same scripture (Habakkuk 2:2) to my attention and from 3 different sources. So I was all ears as Mark shared his profound wisdom and insights with me. And Mark promptly followed up our conversation by sending two emails, including one titled “You Can Hear God’s Voice!”

Early the next morning (Tuesday June 10), I woke up with Holy Spirit’s instruction to immediately apply Mark’s “4 keys to hear God” and also design a new computer desktop image with those 4 keys. After typing my prayer with a 2-way dialog with God, I was astonished with the result – a deeper intimacy with the LORD.

It’s interesting to note that Holy Spirit had actually prompted Jerry to refer me to Mark two weeks earlier knowing we were soon launching our journaling course because he knew Mark well and that he was one of more experienced journalers in the world. However, as most of us frequently do, I failed to seize the opportunity at that time.

LORD, you want each of us to learn to hear Your voice because You love us and have specific instructions to give us each day – not vague thoughts, but specific things You want us to know and to do. You know what works and what doesn’t. You want to take each of us to an entirely new level of abiding in You. You want us to experience Your love like never before. You want us to know that You’re not just here beside us, but You’re here to answer questions that we have. You have been waiting. Heavenly Father, here I go, writing out my spontaneous prayer early in the morning. I’m so excited to get back to what I’ve known for quite a while You want me to do. Forgive me for allowing all sorts of distractions to get in the way of this magnificent habit. Thank You for Your attention grabber yesterday with Habukkuk 2 and the UNCOMMON connection to Mark Virkler and his UNCOMMON message.

Thank You for waking me up early this morning knowing You wanted me to change my desktop background to include an image of Jesus, Mark Virkler’s 4 keys to hear from God, and Habukkuk 2:1-3. Thank You for each image of Jesus You led me to. Thank you Holy Spirit for using me as Your instrument to design the new image using Photoshop. I love it.

Jesus, I see You and hear You saying “You want to dine with me this morning and each day. You’re certainly welcome here in my home and wherever I go. I hear You saying “You want to start having two way conversations instead of one way ones. I hear You saying You’ve been waiting for this moment for so long.” I hear You saying “You’ve been knocking on the door of my heart – that You have the answers to the problems I’ve been facing and that the solutions are very simple. You have solutions to my financial difficulties.”

I hear you saying “Mark Virkler’s web page for Outstanding Links” is full of prospects and new contacts for you – people who have been waiting years to have God connect you to them.” I hear You saying, “Bless Mark – to open new vistas for him through social marketing.”

VISION: I see NEW HORIZONS OF OPPORTUNITIES opening for Mark as He steps into the Internet space age. I see Mark standing at the beach looking out at the ocean while a magnificent sunrise takes place. I see Mark fall to his knees and start to cry. This is what he has been waiting for. This is his MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH. I see people – lots of people starting to run up and surround Mark on the beach. So many people coming. They’ve been waiting to meet Mark. They want to just be near him. They want to learn from him. O God, I’m overwhelmed with what You are showing me. I’m overwhelmed by the joy on so may people’s faces.

Now I see the people around Mark beginning to sit down. Mark is starting to speak to them like You did, Jesus, for Your sermon on the mount. Now the people are eating while they listen. This is one of the most beautiful picnic scenes I have ever seen. So many people. Now more are coming. People are hungry for Your Word. They want to hear from You Jesus. This is what they’ve been waiting for. Overwhelming. Joy. Delight. Free thought. Freedom.

Now I hear You saying Jesus that “You want me to take everyone who signs up for Jerry and my 5 week online journaling course to go through something similar – to learn to hear God by following Mark’s 4 keys.”

I’m so excited. Thank You Jesus for showing this to me.

I hear You saying “You are going to open Mark’s eyes to the new horizons that WEBINARS will open for him. Not just doors, not just gates, but horizons of opportunities. I hear You saying “COVENANT with Mark!!!” You have knit our hearts together. You have been patiently waiting for this moment – for this opportunity to advance the Kingdom of God through the combination of journaling, coaching, and the web.

Praise be to God. Hallelujah. I receive. I will send this prayer to Mark this morning as You are telling me.

Now I see myself lying down to rest. You’re telling me go back to bed. Lay down. You’ve been obedient. My glory is upon You. People will be attracted to You because You will have the “AROMA OF CHRIST.” What you offer will be irresistible to so many people. Rest now. Rest. Peace be with you. My peace. Thank You for dining with me. I’ve really enjoyed this. Now you get it. It’s so easy. I’ve been waiting to have Mark teach you. You will never be the same. Thank You for your obedience – your UNCOMMON obedience. Thank You for acknowledging Me everywhere You go.

Jesus, I hear You say, “Cut and paste a specific verse from Proverbs 3 here now.”

Proverbs 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Thank You for directing my paths. You’ve gotten me here. I’m Yours – all Yours. Dead to myself. Alive in You – only in You.

Jesus, I’m going to email this prayer to Mark now along with the background image for my desktop You helped me design this morning. Then I’ll go to bed. Thank You for being my good Shepherd – my friend. I love You. I bless You.

You can take one more step with your journaling…

Journaling is two lovers sharing love… speaking back and forth.

So you can write in the first person, as Jesus speaking directly to you and calling you by name. He will say, “my son, I want to you know…” so He is speaking in the first person to you… rather than the way you have it written… “I hear you saying that…”

It is just one more step of faith for you to take… not a hard thing… it will come naturally.

You really should read our books “how to hear God’s Voice” and Dialogue With God.” And perhaps order the CD’s also on How to Hear God’s voice.”

On June 18, 2008 the morning after the very first “UNCOMMON Journaling for Destiny” class, I began the “daily” habit of applying Mark’s 4 keys to hear from God. Here is what Jesus told me in response to the Day #1 destiny question:

Day 1 Question
Lord, why do You want me to learn to hear Your voice?

Because I love You and I have specific instructions to give You each day – not vague thoughts, but specific things I want you to know and to do. Randy, I know what works and what doesn’t. I want to take you to an entirely new level of abiding in Me. I want you to experience My love like never before. I want You to know that I’m not just here beside You, but I’m here to answer questions that You have. I’ve been waiting.

All the things you’ve been praying and waiting for, I want to make happen. It was Me who put those desires in your heart. But first you had to learn to hear My voice. I know what order You are to do things, when You are to do things, what to do, and what not to do. I’m not a vague God. Just as you want your children to know clearly what you want them to do, so I want You to know clearly what I want You to to. I love You Randy. I want You to be married to Me, not just engaged. I can use you because You have a heart after my own heart. I’ve been preparing You. The time in NOW. Behold I do a new thing. My glory is upon You. My favor is upon You.

Jesus, I’m overwhelmed. This morning as I reflected back on yesterday, I realized all the breakthroughs that happened in just that one day. Then this morning, I have one of the most awesome days of my life. When Amy told me the Holy Spirit kept nudging her to pay for Beth Spangler, I was so grateful. Beth has been looking for and waiting for a friend like Amy for years. Thank You Jesus. Thank You.

Randy, this journaling course is more for you than it is for the participants. When I had Matt Gregory and Ben Stewart sign up as the first two people in the “UNCOMMON Journaling for Destiny” course, that was huge. You see, I’ve brought them into your life to be in covenant relationship with you for life. The greatest habit I have blessed you with is journaling and now I want to have you bless them with that habit. I want to take them to a much deeper abiding in Me. I want them to learn to hear My voice. Thank You, Randy, for obeying my recent instruction to listen to Julia.

Randy, another reason I want You to hear my voice is because I want You and Mark Virkler to be in covenant relationship with one another. REST: I went to bed around 11:00 pm exhausted, fell asleep immediately, and woke up around 4:35 am to use the bathroom. When I came back to bed, I listened to my entire iTunes playlist for Day #17, including a worship song, Proverbs 17, Acts 17, I Bless You, TPPH 17, TPPP 17, and TPPW 17.

Maui got me up at 5:25 am. After feeding her and letting her outside briefly, I came to my Sacred Place (sunroom) to journal using my brand new “Sacred Time, Sacred Place: A Journal” for the first time. This was an UNCOMMON gift I received in the mail from Bruce (Cook) yesterday. The mail lady managed to deliver our mail despite the 4-5″ of new snow.

In his email to me dated December 15, Bruce wrote “BE expecting a powerful surprise this week! Just remember, in business it’s not always about whether you know someone. Often it Is about value that was created, or trust that leads to action.”

I began my quiet time in my Sacred Place by reading Patricia King’s introduction to her “Sacred Time, Sacred Place” journal. I happened to open to a page that said “In Memory of Oral Roberts!” That immediately grabbed my attention. Then I read the key scripture – Song of Solomon 2:14

O My dove, in the clefts of the rock,
In the secret pace of the steep pathway,
Let me see your form, let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet, and your form is lovely.

Next, I read “A Divine Appointment With Oral Roberts.” Patricia wrote,

“Three months before Dr. Oral Roberts went to be with the Lord, I had the privilege of being with him in his home. Prior to his departure to glory, he invited a number of ministers from around the world into his private quarters to pray over them. During this time he allowed each to ask a question. I desired to know how he had maintained his devotion time in the midst of many years of leading large mandates and assignments from the Lord. Another guest asked the question before it was my turn and I will never forget his answer.

He called his daily time with the Lord his Sacred Time. He explained that when he went into his prayer closet no one was allowed to interrupt him – including his wife and children. Everyone in his family and ministry respected this sacred time – his time alone with God. No phone calls, no visits, no questions, and today we could say, no internet! He informed us that when God spoke to him in his Sacred Time, he obeyed immediately. He stated, “God never had to speak twice to me. When he spoke, I obeyed.” He pursued the Lord with an undivided heart and with full belief that God would speak with him just as He spoke with Moses – face-to-face as a man speaks to his friend.

The enormous fruitfulness of Dr. Oral Roberts’ worldwide ministry was clearly a result of the God encounters and visitation of grace he experienced in his uninterrupted and undisturbed Sacred Time and Sacred Place.”

Next I read “How To Have A Fruitful Devotional Time With Jesus!” This was so good. I especially liked Patricia’s simple teaching about “What to do in a devotional time?” One of the things that jumped out at me was this, “Make a list of things that distract. Somethings in the midst of your devotion time you might receive some distracting thoughts such as, “Oh, I better remember to pay that bill later and email a friend.” Keep a small notepad available, and write those things down so you do not have to think on them again until after your devotion time is over.”

Finally, I read her “One Year Bible Reading Plan.” The Holy Spirit then prompted me to start with Day #1, so I read out loud Genesis 1-2 and Matthew 1 in the Maxwell Leadership Bible declaring and decreeing God’s Word. As I read John Maxwell’s introduction to Genesis, I realized the book of Genesis has 50 chapters. The number 50 is very significant. As I read these 3 chapters in the Bible, these scriptures stood out

Genesis 2:24-25 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Matthew 1:18-25 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

Joseph heard God and obeyed.

I then hand wrote this very first two-way prayer in my “Sacred Time, Sacred Place” journal.

Wow Jesus! My spirit is jumping for joy. Thank you for laying out the entire sequence of steps that were necessary to lead Bruce to sow this UNCOMMON seed – Sacred Time, Sacred Place: A Journal” into my life. Thank You for this morning’s rich abiding time. To You, I give all glory, honor, and praise. Blessed be Your holy name.

Thank You Joseph for your obedience. Your past has not been wasted. Your choices and decisions have led you to this turning point. Today, I lay before you life and death, blessings, and curses. Therefore, CHOOSE LIFE. Choose Me. What you were missing was your Sacred Place. Even your Sacred Time was not sacred. Today you begin a new life in Me, with Me, and through Me. Today you move from the natural to the SUPERNATURAL.

Delight yourself in Me and I will give you the desires of your heart. What are your desires?

Thank you for asking Jesus!

On October 27, 2010 I began weekly Breakthrough Life Coaching sessions with Lynne Lee, who lives in Derby, U.K. She and Renato Amato from Italy are strategic players for “The Spiritual Triangle Between Virginia, the U.K. And Italy.”

After just two weeks of Breakthrough Life Coaching, Lynne has begun experiencing extraordinary breakthroughs in several areas of her life. For example, Lynne now plans to offer “How To Hear God’s Voice” as a coaching program and she’s writing a book this weekend that will be published and become a whole series of books.

The following is the November 9, 2010 post by Lynne Lee titled “This is a powerful way to hear God” for Members of her Christian Life Coaching Cafe.

Life works much better when you operate out of spending time with the Father and hearing His heart for you. When I want to know what God has to say to me I make time to sit undisturbed and write in my journal.

Today I sense the Father asking me to share one of last week’s journal entries with you.

On November 3rd (2010) I wrote:

What do you want me to know today Father? I’m here to listen, I love hearing what you have to say to me.

This is what I sensed the Lord say in reply:

I really am your Daddy. Believe it. You are precious to Me and what matters to you matters to Me.

I love the way you are drawing aside to have special times of communion with Me. Think of how you are with your children and how it gladdens your heart when they choose to spend time with you and ask for your wisdom.

Know that I love you. I will provide all you need and direct your paths. Remember what I said about focus. Focus on one thing and complete it before moving onto the next.

I AM giving you tools and support to help you do what I have called you to do. Be reassured that you are on the path that I have mapped out for you.

It is My idea that you offer How To Hear God’s Voice as a coaching program. People are hungry and they are looking for Me, desperate to know how to hear Me. Run with it, have fun with it and listen for My voice in it. I will direct your steps and show you what it looks like.

You have wisdom because you take time to listen. You will be more in demand. Before you say yes to invitations check to see that it is where I AM working, and have the courage to say no even to good things that will simply keep you busy.

You know more than you know you know. You hear more than you know you do. Many times when you have spontaneously thought to do something it has been My prompting. Have the courage to follow those promptings even when they seem silly to you.

Continue to delight in me. IMMERSE yourself in the things that are dear to My heart and yours and be free to be you. I love you and so do your family and friends. You don’t need to try to be like anyone else, simply be you. Who you are in Me is delightful. You cause My heart to sing and I delight to bless you.

Know that you walk in My blessing and enjoy it. Enjoy what I give you and enjoy who you have become. Delight yourself in abundance and prepare to be surprised at what I will do.

You are being used to transform many lives. Your reach is further than you know.

It’s time to CELEBRATE. Celebrate what I have done and who you have become. Celebrate and know that My goodness and loving kindness last forever.

Pick up the threads I hand you and I will show you how to weave them into a beautiful tapestry. Don’t concern yourself with what it will look like, simply follow My directions and know that it will be beautiful. I will take care of everything just like good daddies do.

Journaling is a powerful way to tune into what the Lord is saying, I hope you are encouraged to try this for yourself.

I began by chattering -

It’s a red letter day! No accident that I am writing in red today. Interesting to note that the Lord is already speaking through events and coincidences. Why is today so significant? Because I am writing a book that will be published. How exciting is that!! It will become a whole series of books….

It feels like you have brought me back to why I went online in the first place – to help people with the help that helped me. If my excitement is anything to go by then I have come home and am about to walk into my destiny. I need to know whether this is an idol that will get in the way and detract from my true purpose…But enough from me, I want to know what you have to say…

Still and quiet your soul and wait. there’s no rush, sit a while with Me and rest. Bask in My presence and let’s enjoy one another.

Just as your lounge echoes light and nourishes the soul, restoring peace, so will you. Your mission is to do people good. Your books will give people who can’t meet with you one on one an opportunity to benefit from the wisdom I have placed in you.

Your name is no accident – Lynne – by the pool or waterfall, refreshing one. You bring encouragement and refreshment wherever you go. Your books will bring hope and encouragement, they will provide keys. Run with this, it is My doing, it was My idea.

Think on how this began. It was born out of prophecy and vision. What is happening now is the fulfillment of a lifetime of desire and longing. I planted the desire to write. I have riches for you to share and now is the time to release them. These last few years have laid the foundation and infrastructure to make it possible.

Keep on dreaming, dream with Me and dare to do what you once thought to be impossible, nothing is impossible with me. I AM the God of infinite possibilities. Partner with Me and allow My Holy Spirit to lead you and show you the way.

Know that you CAN do what I have called you to do. When I call I also equip and you are well equipped.

Enjoy this time and know that the best is yet to come. Put aside any doubts you have and know that I AM the enabler…I will enable you to do this. I will give you what you need when you need it and I will show you how.

I have already connected you with the people who can help and support and cheer you on. You will see your dreams come into being, and hope fulfilled will be like a tree of life.

In the physical realm winter is fast approaching but for you spring is here. the long dormant seeds are bursting forth into life. Enjoy the garden I AM creating for you. Delight in my creation and know that I do all things well.

We have a living God, a speaking God! One who loves us, His children, and He particularly loves to speak to us! He can speak to any one of us who love Him.

“In the Last Days I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17).

You might be thinking, “I read the Bible every day, so I’m hearing from the Lord every day.” While it’s good to read the Bible, the recorded Word of the Lord, which is the foundation of our Christian faith, it’s wonderful to also hear straight from the Lord and “take heed to His sure word of prophecy, as to a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in our hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).

His Word says to “Stir up the gift of God which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6). So, every day should be a new experience for us, a new listening to the Voice of the Lord. Why live only on yesterday�s spiritual food, when we can have fresh “manna from Heaven” (John 6:58) every day? Jesus still speaks today! Listen to what He told me on June 15, 2008:

I have the KEYS – simple keys to BREAKTHROUGH. It’s not complicated. You have to trust me on this. Just keep writing down what You hear me saying. I know what works and what doesn’t. I am the Alpha and Omega, so I see the end from the beginning. I have to show You before you can show others. What you shared at Soul Purpose Church today was good. Even though it seems that most people didn’t get it, seeds were planted. You have a generous heart. What you’re doing in secret, I will reward openly. That’s My word – that’s My promise.

The very first thing I wrote down was “Complete everything associated with my journaling e-book, including 1) Revise my free e-book, 2) Create 11 auto-responders, 3) Narrate book, 4) PRESS release. This will create substantial residual income for Julia and leave a tremendous legacy.”

Yesterday, I began a series about “Fruit of Journaling.” I wrote about “Covenant Relationship – Authenticity.” Today, I share a second example of fruit from journaling, namely a Vibrant Prayer Life.

I have a vibrant prayer life and a radical faith. When the Lord asks me to do something I’m willing to do that, whatever the cost.

As I have journaled more and more over time, I’ve developed such an intimacy and love for Jesus. Being thankful for the little things in life helps me maintain my joy.

Nehemiah 8:10b, “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

Isaiah 29:19 The humble also shall increase their joy in the LORD, And the poor among men shall rejoice In the Holy One of Israel.

There is a protocol for entering the presence of the King – thanksgiving and praise.

Ne 12:46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Ps 69:30 I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

Ps 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

My favorite method for journaling is “Yesterday … Prayer Power.” At the start of each morning, I make a list of things I did and recall happening the day before. At first yesterday is a blur, but as I start to write down what I remember, I begin to notice all kinds of blessings that I might have missed or forgotten about otherwise. I understand how things are related and recognize how God is using me to change lives. I notice what works and what doesn’t. At the end of each item, I write “Thank You Jesus!” Based on personal experience, writing those 3 words makes a tremendous difference in developing an attitude of gratitude and giving glory to God.

After thanking Jesus for the blessings of yesterday, I ask Him what He wants to share with me that morning. Then I write down what comes to my mind spontaneously without judging it. Very quickly, there is a FLOW of thoughts and love. I keep writing until the flow stops. By writing down my conversation with the LORD, I can go back and review it.

As Mark Virkler teaches, “Hearing God’s voice is as easy as quieting your mind (STILLNESS), fixing your eyes on Jesus (VISION), tuning to SPONTANEITY, and writing (JOURNALING).” Mark is the author of “How To Hear God’s Voice.”

Here is what Virginia Morton, author of Marching Through Culpeper, wrote in her blog post on July 8, 2009,

“Two-way journaling with Jesus is powerful!

So you’re probably wondering what is two-way journaling. It’s actually not complicated. Write in your prayer journal on a regular basis, daily if possible. Ask Jesus specific questions about your problems, decisions, direction, etc. Picture Him sitting beside you. Then be still and listen for His answers. According to Jerry, when we’re quiet and waiting, we should write whatever comes into our minds. This is how we hear His voice. Don’t think about what you’re writing and don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense. Just write everything that comes.

The power is when you go back and read what He has said. Believe that it is His voice and act. I’ve found I’m the most inspired and know I’m on the right track when I go back and reread Jesus’ answers in my prayer journal. I like to highlight them in red.”

I don’t profess to always be right in hearing from God, but being right 80% of the time and acting on what I hear is far better than never or rarely trusting in what I hear and acting on it.

In John 10:27, Jesus says “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

My journal is full of incredible God stories and answered prayers. Answered prayers build faith as well as my prayer life.

Practicing the presence of God in my mornings has helped me develop the habit of practicing the presence of God throughout my days. I now stay in constant dialog with the LORD as I go about my days.

What is prayer? It’s communion with God. Prayer is the Christian’s lifeline to God, and with it lives are changed for eternity! E.M. Bounds knew the secrets of prayer and that God has established divine principles and promises for our every need. Since the time of the apostles, no man besides E.M. Bounds has left such a rich inheritance of biblical research into the life of prayer. Prayer was as natural to him as breathing the air. He made prayer first and foremost in his life because he knew it as the strongest link between man and God.

E.M. Bounds wrote, “The most important lesson we can learn is how to pray… God shapes the world by prayer.”

Mt 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

#1) COVENANT RELATIONSHIP – AUTHENTICITY

THRIVING not surviving

Journaling has helped me be more real with God. And that leads to being more real with people. Authenticity is where real life happens. Authenticity leads to deeper relationships. And according to Jesus in the Greatest Commandment, life is about RELATIONSHIPS.

The Greatest Commandment = Life is about relationships!

The theme verse for my life is the Greatest Commandment shared by Jesus in three different Gospels. Jesus said that the whole Bible can be summarized in the Greatest Commandment – LOVE God with all your being and LOVE your neighbor as yourself. Life is all about love. Love should be your top priority, primary objective, and greatest ambition. Busyness is a great enemy of relationships. The best was to spell love is “T-I-M-E.”

Mt 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.“

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them upon your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:4-7)

Are you experiencing the love of God daily?

C.S. Lewis wrote, “The prayer preceding all prayers is this, ‘May it be the real I who speaks. May it be the real Thou that I speak to.‘” It’s so important to be authentic, to be real, to take off our masks in relationships.

One of the greatest blessings we can ever experience in our lives is the gift of COVENANT relationships.

God is a covenant God, and He created marriage as a covenant. So before we can understand what marriage is, we need to learn what covenant is. Without the binding commitment of a covenant, a marriage is only a promise on paper, which moths and rust can destroy. (Matthew 6:19-20)

What is a covenant relationship?

1. It is a Lawful Fellowship
2. It is a Stable Fellowship
3. It Is a Faith-Inspiring Fellowship
4. It Is an Exclusive Fellowship

In a covenant, the root concept is commitment. Commitment unto death. If you and I are in covenant, and you have a need, and I am able to fulfill it, there wouldn’t even be any thought about “Should I?” I would desire to meet the need even at the expense of not meeting my own needs.

Blessings of Relationships I’ve experienced

• WIFE: As I have grown closer to God, I have fallen in love with my wife more than when I first met her. I am committed to my wife for life. Just as Jesus promises to never leave nor forsake me, I will never leave nor forsake her. That commitment has sustained us through tough times.
• CHILDREN: As I have grown closer to God, I have developed more patience with my children, loving them for who they are and where they are at in their life journey, not for what they do. I regularly pray for and speak blessings into their lives. And guess what – they are making better and better choices as time goes on. That’s the favor of God.
• PARENTS: As I have grown closer to God, I have developed a deep sense of appreciation for my parents and my wife’s parents for all they sowed into my life. For me, to honor them now is a privilege, not a duty. I adopt their needs and concerns as my own and pray regularly for those and do what I can to help out. I have great joy seeing those prayers answered.
• FRIENDS: As I have grown closer to God, He has blessed me with close relationships with many godly people. I am committed to my close friends. We meet regularly, often virtually and in small groups. Prayer is a regular part of our communication and blessing of one another. As I pray for them and God reveals how I can possibly help them, I connect them to people, ideas, and resources to fulfill their God-given destinies.
• WORK: I view my clients as covenant partners, not as money trees. I pursue Kingdom transactions rather than business transactions.

Welcome to “30 Days to Breakthrough!”

It’s no accident you are here. God has connected you to me to BLESS YOU – to allow you to experience Him in extraordinary ways for extraordinary fruit.

That’s something I can give to you because I experiencing God in extraordinary ways for extraordinary fruit nearly every day.

That’s no joke. Do you know it’s been several years since I had a “bad day.”

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’ve had some storms in life – some relational ones, some financial ones, some health-related, and still others. Yet, through it all, I’ve always maintained my JOY. In fact, it’s extremely rare that my daily JOY score is not at least an 8 or a 9 on a scale of 1-10. As the Bible says, “The JOY of the LORD is my strength.”

What about you?
What is your average daily JOY score on a scale of 1-10?
What has it been for the past 30 days?
For the past 90 days?
For the past year?
For the past 3 years?
What do you want it to be 30 days from now?

Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and one of the most influential pastors in America, says “The purpose of the Bible is to change lives!” and “The purpose of preaching is to change lives!” That’s our purpose here to – to change your life. But for that to happen you must do your part.

For me, journaling is the LEAD DOMINO for my life. It’s THE KEY to unlock my dreams. I think that’s true for many other people as well.

There are lots of benefits of journaling, but here are two related to TIME and MONEY.

1) Each minute of planning saves ten minutes of implementation.

2) Brian Tracy, a motivational speaker, says “What does it take to succeed on a big scale? A tremendous God-given talent? Inherited wealth? A decade of postgraduate education? Connections? Fortunately, for most of us, what it takes it something very simple and accessible: clear, written goals.” According to Brian Tracy, a study of Harvard graduates found that After two years, the 3 percent who had written goals achieved more financially than the other 97 percent combined!”

Extrapolating from this, only 3 percent of people set written goals and those who do earn on average more than 30x as much as those who don’t.

During the next 30 days, we want to challenge you to COMMIT to establishing the HABIT of journaling every day without missing a single day.

Why focus on a habit? Because good habits are the key to all success. The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine. Successful people do daily what unsuccessful people do occasionally. And we want you to be successful.

Why 30 days? Because on average it takes 3-4 weeks to establish a new habit.

So here’s the million dollar question, “Will you commit TODAY to journal (write) every day for the next 30 days without missing a single day and let me be your Journaling Coach?”

If so, write (or type) this on 3 pieces of paper, “Starting _____________ (date), I commit to journal every day for the next 30 days.” Then post these reminders in three of the most common places you visit nearly every day (e.g. the bathroom mirror, your computer, your desk, your refrigerator, your car). Also, let 3 family members and/or friends know about this commitment you have made. The purpose of this is ACCOUNTABILITY – the password to your future.

If you won’t make this commitment, I can’t help you as a Journaling Coach. To change or grow, your first step is to want to change. Your second step is to ask for and receive help.

As your JOURNALING COACH, I’d like to also ask you to commit to reading one of these emails every day, without missing a day. If you do happen to miss a day, go back right away the next day and catch up. You want a journal entry for every day. I’ll be asking you one new question each day.

Why read an email every day? Because during the next 30 days I’ll be laying out a step-by-step plan for you to GROW and BREAKTHROUGH. By taking baby steps, day after day, you’re much more likely to succeed – to keep moving forward and not give up. If you follow my plan, you’re almost certain to experience much more fruit in your life.
