We have a living God, a speaking God! One who loves us, His children, and He particularly loves to speak to us! He can speak to any one of us who love Him.

“In the Last Days I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams” (Acts 2:17).

You might be thinking, “I read the Bible every day, so I’m hearing from the Lord every day.” While it’s good to read the Bible, the recorded Word of the Lord, which is the foundation of our Christian faith, it’s wonderful to also hear straight from the Lord and “take heed to His sure word of prophecy, as to a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in our hearts” (2 Peter 1:19).

His Word says to “Stir up the gift of God which is in you” (2 Timothy 1:6). So, every day should be a new experience for us, a new listening to the Voice of the Lord. Why live only on yesterday�s spiritual food, when we can have fresh “manna from Heaven” (John 6:58) every day? Jesus still speaks today! Listen to what He told me on June 15, 2008:

I have the KEYS – simple keys to BREAKTHROUGH. It’s not complicated. You have to trust me on this. Just keep writing down what You hear me saying. I know what works and what doesn’t. I am the Alpha and Omega, so I see the end from the beginning. I have to show You before you can show others. What you shared at Soul Purpose Church today was good. Even though it seems that most people didn’t get it, seeds were planted. You have a generous heart. What you’re doing in secret, I will reward openly. That’s My word – that’s My promise.

In his book “The Total Money Makeover,” Dave Ramsey writes, “You can get anywhere if you simply go one step at a time” The way you eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Find something to do and do that with vigor until it is complete; then and only then do you move to the next step. If you try to do everything at once, you will fail.

The power of FOCUS is what causes our baby steps to work. When you try to do everything at once, progress can be very slow… Because you attack several areas at once, you don’t finish anything you start for a long time. That makes you feel that you aren’t accomplishing anything, which is very dangerous” The power of focus is that it works. Things happen” The power of priority causes the baby steps to work.

Brian Tracy, a motivational speaker, says “What does it take to succeed on a big scale? A tremendous God-given talent? Inherited wealth? A decade of postgraduate education? Connections? Fortunately, for most of us, what it takes it something very simple and accessible: clear, written goals.” According to Brian Tracy, a study of Harvard graduates found that after two years, the 3 percent who had written goals achieved more financially than the other 97 percent combined!”

6) Keep Your Commitments

Letting your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No,” “No” is extremely important. Every time you fail to honor your word, it takes away the power behind your spoken word. You lose credibility.

Like many of you, I have trouble saying “No.” As a result, I find myself over-committed. It’s easy to justify this wrong behavior by saying I’m meeting the needs of those around me. But God doesn’t ask or require us to meet everyone’s needs.

When you’re late for a meeting or appointment, even a few minutes late, that’s failing to keep your word. Often it’s easy to justify why that happens, but an excuse is just that – an excuse. Rarely are we late because of circumstances outside of our control.

When I journal using the “Yesterday…” method, I list both highlights and low points for each day. By reflecting on the low points, I notice character flaws in me that need prayer and work to overcome.

I have a few very simple gauges that let me know if I’m too busy. Being late is one of them. Another is not taking care of my body, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Failing to exercise at least 5 days per week is a bad sign. As I complete this book, I am being most convicted by this particular section. This is an area I must work hard at to improve at.

Journaling helps you get organized. So many people have asked me, “Randy, can you help me get organized?” So what I decided to do is write my e-book “UNCOMMON Journaling For Breakthroughs” and prepare online courses combined with accountability (real life coaching) to train others to journal, who in turn can train more people, in essence creating disciples who disciple others.

Journaling helps reduce the noise in your life which helps you plan better and become more organized. Many people reject the notion of planning and setting goals. It’s been said, “We want to live like there’s no tomorrow, but we want to plan like we’ll live forever.”

I personally use The Journal software to set and follow through with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals. While I don’t profess to have my whole act together, this definitely help me stay on track. God doesn’t want us to be like a pinball bouncing randomly all over. I believe God wants to send and steer us like cruise missiles.

There is tremendous power in writing something down. The Bible teaches the power of life and death is in the tongue. I believe there is even more power in the written word.

James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Many people have told me that I am able to change (improve) my behavior very quickly. That’s because I reflect on what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong. Most of the time when things work out poorly, it’s because of poor choices I make. During my quiet times abiding in the LORD, the Holy Spirit has no problem convicting me for ways I have messed up.

Bill Gates (Microsoft) says “If we don’t act on a good idea within 24 hours, we are less than 50% likely to ever act on it. If we haven’t acted on it inside of days, then we are less than 2% likely to ever act on it.” Journaling helps me follow through with ideas, opportunities, and commitments much better.

All of us have blind spots. Most or all of us experience difficulties making changes in our lives on our own without a coach. We often know what we should do, but fail to do it. We find ourselves failing to following through with all our commitments because we over commit and don’t say “no” often enough. However, with ACCOUNTABILITY, we all do much better. Journaling helps hold you accountable.

Tony Stoltzfus, a well-respected coach trainer, says, “First and foremost, coaching is a relationship between a coach and a client. It’s a relationship designed to empower healthy people to take initiative in their own lives to grow and change. That growth and change is future-oriented. Coaching is oriented toward dreams and goals and where you want to go. It takes you from where you are to where you want to be.”

God is about relationships! So is life. In fact, in the Greatest Commandment, Jesus basically said life is about relationships and the whole Bible comes down to these two commands – love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has had a greater impact on me than any other ministry in my life. The FCA Bible had a profound impact on my life. Being exposed to that Bible in the Fall of 2001 led me to start the habit of daily journaling on January 1, 2002 and taught me the PRESS method for journaling. Journaling eventually evolved to become the lead domino for my life.

In the introduction to the 2001 edition of the FCA Bible, Dal Shealy, former President and CEO of the FCA, wrote,

Dear Teammate,

You are holding in your hands the greatest book ever written. It is a book that changed my life and will change your life if you let it.

It is our playbook, containing God’s Game Plan for life. Study it. Memorize it. Pour your heart into it. And most of all live it out.

It won’t be easy, but the best in life never is. Let me tell you, it will all be worth it. Living by the “plays” in this book will bring so much joy and peace to your life. I promise. I pray that this book will touch your life like it touched mine. Don’t let it become a dust catcher. Use it daily. The Master Coach wants to talk to you.

Your Break Through Is Just One Click Away!

Let’s start by talking about what coaching is. First and foremost, coaching is a relationship between a coach and a client. It’s a relationship designed to empower healthy people to take initiative in their own lives to grow and change. That growth and change is future-oriented. Coaching is oriented toward dreams and goals and where you want to go. It takes you from where you are to where you want to be.

In doing that, coaching works with internal motivation. You’re not doing something someone else wants you to do. You’re setting your own goal in doing what you want to do. And as you do that, you and your coach will come up with a plan to achieve your goal and it will be personalized and customized toward your needs. It will work with your schedule. It’ll work with your time. It’ll work with the resources that you have available.

Your coach will help you put a structure around your goal, a structure around your plan that will help you achieve it. You’ll get perspective. You’ll get feedback. You’ll get regular accountability. And that structure will keep you on track with your change. So, instead of muddling around, trying to do something that’s unclear, you’ll create definite goals and action steps to get it done.

Coaching is a relationship that’s future-oriented. It works on your internal motivation. It’s personalized, and it creates a structure for your growth. In summary, a coach is a person walking with you to empower you to reach your own goals.

What role are daily habits playing in growing your faith?

Yesterday evening, my wife and I went to DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Constitution Hall in Washington DC for our niece’s (Olivia Scott) high school graduation service. We left our home in Culpeper at 3:45 PM and didn’t get back home until 1 AM. My normal bed time is about 10 PM.

This morning as I was preparing this message, I learned this from the DAR Constitution Hall website, “Each year, over 600,000 people pass through the doors of DAR Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C.’s largest concert hall.” What’s so unusual about this is that Olivia graduated from George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, not Wash DC. This visit was especially rewarding to me because I’m like a sponge soaking up as much as possible about the true Christian heritage of our nation.

As God would have it, Olivia was chosen to be the “Queen” of the Falls Church Memorial Day parade. The Secretary of the Army presided over that. Olivia’s soccer team just won the state championship last week and Olivia was chosen as the player of the year for the region (and maybe the state). Olivia will be going to Messiah College in the Fall of 2008. She is the first of her cousins to choose to go to a Christian college.

At yesterday’s graduation service, my favorite part was when 3 people in the George Mason High School choir sang a song titled “When You Believe.” In the refrain, the lyrics “There can be miracles when you believe!” are repeated several times. That could easily be my life slogan with all the miracles I experience every week.

My UNCOMMON journaling has led to a radical faith, which has led to an UNCOMMON life – full of passion and adventure. I often tell people that I feel like I have the lead role in an Indiana Jones’ movie. I’ve come to the realization that the optimal way for me to bless millions of families is to teach and impart my gift of journaling to others through small and large groups on the web. I will make journaling disciples who in turn make other journaling disciples.

Today (4 and 8 PM EDT) is the last time Dr. Jerry Graham and I will be hosting our “UNCOMMON Journaling for Breakthroughs” class for at least 5-6 weeks. The feedback we have received from those who have participated thus far has been extremely positive.

Let me share just two testimonies. Kathy Bornarth, the Washington Area Director for Birthmother Ministries, sent me an email at 6 pm on June 10 stating, “Randy, the staff and I would like to take your class at some point, but I’m not sure when we can do it. I thought about tomorrow, but our AC has been out for the past 2 days and we’ve been working from home or are meeting elsewhere each day. I may sign up late tomorrow if the air is on. If it’s not on, will you be doing another series anytime soon?”

I didn’t see Kathy’s email until yesterday morning (June 11). When I did, I promptly sent Kathy this reply, “Thank you for letting me know. After tomorrow, we do not plan to offer any more UNCOMMON Journaling for Breakthroughs webinars for at least 5-6 weeks. I recommend you seize this opportunity.” Immediately after the webinar, Kathy shared this feedback in an email, “Hi! We did (seize the opportunity). We had 5 people listening today. It was terrific!”

Another participant (an accomplished Christian leader) shared this in the post webinar survey, “Good information, great presentation and passion for subject. Great usage of web and software. I am committed to start journaling. I used to journal all the time and have gotten away from it due to a busy schedule. Your points helped me see I need to slow down.”
